The Vancouver Canucks joined the National Hockey League for the 1970-71 season, along with the Buffalo Sabres. In the club’s 38 years in the NHL the Canucks have been Division Champs five times (1975, 1992, 1993, 2004, 2007) and Conference Champs twice (1982, 1994). In the Canucks 1982 appearances the Stanley Cup Finals the team was swept by the New York Islanders. In the 1994 Finals the New York Rangers need the full seven games to oust their Canadian opponents.
The three completed seasons since the 2004-05 lockout have been up and down for the Vancouver Canucks, with one good season sandwiched between two mediocre ones. In 2005-06 and 2007-08 the team failed to qualify for the NHL postseason. They took 4th in their division with 92 points in 2006 and 5th with 82 points last season. In between, the team made it into the Stanley Cup playoffs with 105 points. The team eliminated the Dallas Stars in seven games before losing in the Semis to the Anaheim Ducks.
The 2008 off-season was a tough one for the franchise, but maybe a good one in the long term:
- general manager Dave Nonis was fired and player agent Mike Gillis was hired as his replacement
- defenseman Luc Bourdon, a 10th overall selection in the 2005 National Hockey League entry draft, died in a motorcycle crash
- Canuck veteran and leader Trevor Linden retired
- twelve year Canuck veteran defenceman Markus Naslund, the team’s captain and all-time leading scorer, was taken off the free agent market by the New York Rangers
- Brendan Morrison tested the free agent waters and wound up signing with the Anaheim Ducks.
On the plus side, the Vancouver Canucks:
- picked up young forward Steve Bernier for draft picks in a trade with the Buffalo Sabre
- signed free agent Pavol Demitra
- traded Lukas Krajicek for Shane O'Brien
- added veteran role players Darcy Hordichuk, Ryan Johnson and forward Kyle Wellwood.
The Vancouver Canucks are in the Northwest Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Hockey League.
