In 1967 the National Hockey League doubled in size overnight, going from 6 to 12 teams. One of those teams was the Oakland Seals – a franchise that was established primarily because CBS demanded two California-based teams as part of a television broadcast deal. After nine money losing seasons it became clear the San Francisco – Oakland area was not yet ready for the NHL and the team was allowed to relocate to Cleveland, where they were renamed the Barons. The Barons lasted two years before the owners, Cleveland businessmen George and Gordon Gund, merged them with the Minnesota North Stars.

The Gunds wanted to get back into the San Francisco Bay area and in 1990 the NHL allowed them to sell their minority position in the North Stars and awarded them the San Jose franchise that was part of the League’s 1991-92 expansion.

In 16 NHL seasons the San Jose Sharks have made it into the postseason 11 times. The Sharks have made it past the first round 8 times, and into the Conference Finals once. That sole Conference Final appearance was in 2004, the season before the lockout. The Sharks eliminated the St. Louis Blues in the Quarterfinals and the Colorado Avalanche in the semis before being themselves eliminated by the Calgary Flames.

In the three complete seasons since the lockout the San Jose Sharks have finished no lower than 2nd in the Pacific Division, but have been unable to translate their regular season success into playoff success. Since the resumption of play following the 2004-05 lockout the Sharks have made it past the Quarterfinals each year only to be eliminated in the Semis by the Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red Wings and the Dallas Stars.

In the 2008 offseason the San Jose named former Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan as their new head coach, replacing current Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson. McLellan has been a head coach at the junior level and an assistant in the NHl. This is his first head coaching position in the NHL. They also signed defensemen Rob Blake, Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich, as well as re-signing Jody Shelley, Brian Boucher, Jeremy Roenick, Christian Ehrhoff, Marcel Goc, Joe Pavelski, Ryane Clowe, Lukas Kaspar and Douglas Murray.

The San Jose Sharks are in the Pacific Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Hockey League.
