The New Jersey Devils started in 1974 in Kansas City as the Kansas City Scouts. After two seasons in KC the team was moved to Denver and renamed the Colorado Avalanche (a name that would be reclaimed in 1995 by the current Denver NHL franchise). In 1982 the franchise was moved east and renamed the New Jersey Devils. Since 2007 the team has played home games at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The Devils are almost always in the playoffs, making the tournament in eighteen of the past twenty seasons.

The Devils have been Stanley Cup champs three times. Their first Stanley Cup win was in 1995, when the Devils went 16-4 through the NHL playoffs. They beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 in the Western Conference Quarterfinals, the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 in the Semifinals, the Philadelphia Flyers 4–2 in the Conference Finals and swept the Detroit Red Wings in four straight to take the Stanley Cup. Five years later the Devils defeated the Florida Panthers in four, the Maple Leafs in six, the Flyers in seven and the Since the resumption of play following the 2004-05 lockout the Dallas Stars in six to become NHL Champions a second time. Most recently, the New Jersey Devils were the 2003 Stanley Cup Champions, eliminating the Bruins in five, Tampa Bay Lighting in five, and finishing off with two thrilling seven games series against the Ottawa Senators in the Conference Finals and the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup Championship. The following season the team was eliminated in the first round, losing a quiet 1-4 Quarterfinals series to the Philadelphia Flyers.

In the three seasons since the 2004-05 lockout the Devils have turned in solid regular season numbers (two divisional 1st place finishes and one 2nd), only to stumble early in the playoffs. In 2006 the Devils swept the New York Rangers in the Quarterfinals but fell in five to the Carolina Hurricanes. In 2007 they took Tampa Bay in the first round but fell in five to Ottawa. The 2007-08 New Jersey Devils won 46 and finished second in the Eastern Conference Atlanta Division. They were eliminated in the NHL 2008 Quarterfinals by the New York Rangers, 4-1.

The New Jersey Devils are in the Atlantic Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League.
