Despite not making it past the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 1992, the Montreal Canadiens remain the most storied franchise in NHL history. The club’s 24 Stanley Cup Championships are unrivalled; with the second place Toronto Maple Leafs nine championships behind.

The Montreal Canadiens were founded in1909 as a charter member of the National Hockey Association. In 1917 four of the five teams in the NHA split off after a dispute with the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts franchise. The National Hockey League as formed in 1917 consisted of the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Quebec Bulldogs and Ottawa Senators. Because a league without a Toronto team was unthinkable, a deal was worked out whereby the Toronto Blueshirts became part of the NHL under new management.

The last of the club’s 24 Stanley Cup Championships came in 1993. The Montreal Canadiens finished the season third in their division, with 102 points. The team knocked off provincial rivals the Quebec Nordiques in six in the first round, swept the Buffalo Sabres in the second, eliminated the New York Islanders in five in the Conference Finals and took the Los Angeles Kings in five – an enviable 16-4 romp through the competition. The Canadiens have not gone past the second round in the 14 seasons since.

In the first season back from the 2004-05 lockout the Montreal Canadiens finished third in the Northeast Division, losing in 6 to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Quarterfinals. 2005-06 saw the team drop 3 points (93 to 90), one place (third to fourth) and out of the playoffs.

The 2007-08 season spells trouble for the rest of the league in 2008-09. For the first time since the 1992-93 Championship season the Montreal Canadiens finished with over 100 points (104) and in first place in the division. In the first round of the 2008 NHL Stanley Cup Playoff they faced another Original Six team, the Boston Bruins. In a bruising seven game series the Canadiens beat the Bruins, but paid a price in injuries. The physically weakened team was not able to hold up to the resurgent Philadelphia Flyers and fell in five in the Semifinals.
