The Calgary Flames began as the Atlanta Flames, a 1972 NHL expansion franchise that lasted eight years in Georgia before relocating to Alberta for the 1980-81 season. The Flames are one of two Alberta teams in the NHL. The other one is the Edmonton Oilers and the intra-provincial rivalry between the two franchises is well-known.
In the Calgary Flames’ inaugural season they made the playoffs and won their first two series. In the 5-game preliminary round the Flames swept the Chicago Blackhawks. In the Quarterfinals they needed all seven games to eliminate the Philadelphia Flyers. In the Semifinals they fell in 6 to the Dallas Stars. Five years later, having been in the playoffs six years in a row, they went all the way to the 1986 Stanley Cup Final, losing in five to the Montreal Canadiens after handing walking papers to the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers and the St. Louis Blues. Three years later they worked their way through the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks to a rematch in the Finals with the Montreal Canadiens. This time they won it all. The team did not return to the Finals for fifteen years, missing the playoffs eight times and losing in the first round six times. When they did return to the Finals in 2004 the Calgary Flames battled past the Canucks, Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks before falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a punishing 7 game series.
In the three seasons since the 2004-05 lockout the Calgary Flames have always made it to the playoffs and never made it out of the first round, losing to the Anaheim Ducks in 2006, the Detroit Red Wings in 2007 and the San Jose Sharks in 2008.
In July of 2006 head coach and general manager Darryl Sutter turned over the head coaching duties to his assistant, Jim Playfair. In his single season as head coach of the Calgary Flames, his team went 43–29–0-10 and made the playoffs. In June, 2007, Playfair was replaced as head coach of the Calgary Flames by Mike Keenan, who had most recently been GM for the Florida Panthers.
The Calgary Flames are in the Northwest Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Hockey League.
