The AFC west has been dominated by the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos in recent years. The Raiders won the division three years running at the start of the decade but haven’t finished higher than third since the 2003 season. Owner Al Davis is infamous for running the team according to his personal feelings about individual coaches and players rather than on the basis of what is done on the field. Current Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach John Gruden led the Raiders to division championships in 2000 and 2001, only to seek and get his release to sign with the Bucs following a falling out with Davis. Offensive coordinator Tom Callahan took over and had a good first year, leading the team to its third straight divisional championship. But Callahan left in 2003, to be replaced by former Washington Redskins head coach Norv Turner. Turner lasted 2 seasons and was fired after two consecutive last place finishes. Davis then hired Art Schell, whom he had fired as head coach in 1995. Schell lasted until January of 2007, when he was replaced by 31-year-old USC offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, the youngest coach head coach in the NFL.
