Team History
The Utah Jazz began as the New Orleans Jazz in 1974. The team’s best season while in the Big Easy was 1977-78, when they went 39-43. Arena problems were a constant source of frustration for fans and players. The Jazz’s played its first season in the Loyola University Field House on a court that was so far off the field house floor that the players’ association made the team put a net around it. Later seasons called the Superdome home. The team’s lease arrangement was reportedly one of the worst in the NBA and, after losing five million dollars in five years, the team was moved to Salt Lake City for the 1978-79 season. Why they decided to keep the “Jazz” name in white bread, Mormon Utah is anybody’s guess.
The Jazz made their first appearance in the playoffs in 1984, knocking off the Denver Nuggets in the First Round and losing to the Phoenix Suns in the Conference Semifinals. In the 25 years since then the Utah Jazz have made the playoffs 22 times. They made the NBA Finals in1997 and 1998, losing both series to the Chicago Bulls, who were at the height of their dynasty years. After missing the playoffs in 2004-06, the Jazz improved by 10 wins to return to the playoff in 2007. They eliminated the Rockets in 7 in the First Round, knocked off the Golden State Warriors in 5 in the Semifinals and lost to the Spurs in 5 in the Conference Finals. This past spring, following a 54-28 season that was good enough for fist place in the Northwest division, the Jazz lost the Conference Semifinal in 6 to the Los Angeles Lakers after again eliminating frequent playoff rival Houston Rockets in the First Round. 2008-09
