Team History
In 1968 Phoenix was awarded an NBA expansion franchise. Thirty years later the Phoenix Suns are the winningest franchise without an NBA championship. They hold the fourth-best all-time winning percentage (.558) among NBA teams, behind only the Los Angeles Lakers (.613), San Antonio Spurs (.595) and the Boston Celtics (.587). The team has 6 Pacific Division and two Western Conference titles.
Since the acquisition of Steve Nash in 2004 from Dallas, the Suns have been a powerhouse in the NBA. In the 2004-05 season the Suns broke the 60 win mark, going 62-20, largely due to the acquisition of. Nash. He was named MVP Mike D'Antoni was named NBA Coach of the Year. They went three deep in the playoffs, losing to San Antonio in the Conference Finals. In 2006 they again made it to the Conference Finals, losing to Dallas in six. In 2007 the Suns lost in the Semis to San Antonio, despite yet another 60 win regular season. In 2008 they won 55 and got knock out by San Antonio in the First Round – a huge disappointment.
2008-2009
The Suns have never won fewer than 54 games in a season since the arrival of Steve Nash in 2004. Late in the 2007-08 regular season the Suns traded four-time All-Star forward Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat for Shaquille O’Neal. In March they signed guard Gordan Giricek. In May head coach Mike D’Antoni left for the Knicks and Terry Porter, a Detroit Pistons assistant coach, was named head coach of the Phoenix Suns. The off-season was not kind. The team was well over the salary cap and consequently had difficulty signing free agents. In the 2008 NBA Draft the team signed Robin Lopez (15th overall) and Goran Dragic, originally selected by the San Antonio Spurs. The 2008-09 season looks to be a challenging one for one of the NBA’s most consistent sell-outs.
The Phoenix Suns are in the Northwest Division of the 3-division Western Conference of the National Basketball Association.
