Team History
The Philadelphia 76ers began life as the Syracuse Nationals, the eastern-most franchise of the National Basketball League. In 1949, the Nationals and six other NBL teams merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the National Basketball Association.
A Philadelphia paper magnate bought the Nationals and brought them to Philadelphia in 1963, renaming them the 76ers. The signing of Philadelphia high school legend Wilt Chamberlain during the 1964-65 season put the team on course for a collision with the Boston Celtics, who owned the division. The next year the Celtics’ eight-year reign as Eastern Division regular-season champions came to an end. The two teams met in the Conference Championship. The 7 game series was the stuff of legends, with the Celtics winning and going on to be NBA champs. It was the start of a very east-coast rivalry.
The 76ers have been NBA Champions three times and have five conference titles. The team’s last trip to the NBA Finals was in 2001, when they defeated the Indiana Pacers in the First Round, the Toronto Raptors in the Semifinals and the Milwaukee Bucks in the Conference Finals before losing in five to the Lakers in the NBA Finals. In 2007-08 the team lost in the First Round to the Detroit Pistons. We have cheap tickets for all NBA regular season and playoff games.
At this point in the team’s history, the 76ers are still in one of those slumps that often follows the loss of a team’s big man. For the 76ers, from the 1996 NBA Draft until his trade to the Denver Nuggets on December 19, 2006, that was Allen Iverson. In the 2006-07 season, the Sixers went 35-47, missing the playoffs. In 2007-08 the team improved to 40-42, losing in the First Round of the NBA Playoffs in six to the Detroit Pistons.
2008-2009
In July the 76ers stole power forward Elton Brand away from the Los Angeles Clippers (if “stealing” can be applied to something for which one pays $79.795 million over 5 years). The other reason Brand came east was because, he says, he has a better chance at winning an NBA Championship playing in the Eastern Conference. Other moves included signing Kareem Rush from the Indiana Pacers, Royal Ivey of the Milwaukee Bucks and free agents Louis Williams and Andre Iguodala. With a line up like this, playoff tickets are going to be hot here at your trusted ticket brokers.
The Philadelphia 76ers are in the Atlanta Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.
