Team History
The Orlando Magic entered the NBA as part of a 1989 four team expansion. The other three new franchises were the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves. The team took off as a perennial contender with the drafting of Shaquille O'Neal in 1992. In 1994-95 the team made it to the NBA Finals, taking out the Boston Celtics (3-1), Chicago Bulls (4-2) and the Indiana Pacers (4-3). They were swept by Houston in the NBA Finals. The following year they were swept 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Final by the runaway train Chicago Bulls at their peak. Discouraged by the awesome talent of the Bulls, Shaq left Orlando as a free agent, looking for a large market contender. 1996 would be the Magic’s last playoff series win for 12 years.
Head coach Brian Hill was fired as head coach of the Magic in May 23, 2007. After a bit of a soap opera with Florida Gator coach Billy Donovan announcing he would become the new Orlando Magic coach and then two days later announcing he was staying in Florida, Stan Van Gundy was named head coach of the Orlando Magic, becoming the ninth head coach in franchise history. In his first season with the team, Van Gundy led the team a 52-30 record, a 12 game improvement over 2006-07’s 40-42. This past spring the Magic took the Toronto Raptors in the First Round, 4-1, the franchise’s first playoff series win since 1996. They lost in five to the Detroit Piston in the Semifinals. We’ve got cheap tickets for the Orlando Magic, regular season and playoffs.
2008-2009
The loss to the Detroit Pistons in the 2008 Semifinals only whetted the Magic’s appetite. In 2008-09 the team expects to build on last year’s stellar 52-30 record, good enough for first place in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division. In the off-season the team signed Courtney Lee, acquired free agents Anthony Johnson and Mickael Pietrus, traded for Keyon Dooling from the New Jersey Nets, waived James Augustine and re-signed Adonal Foyle.
The Orlando Magic are in the Southeast Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.
