Team History
The New York Knicks started as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946. The Association’s first game ever was in Canada, where the New York Knicks defeated the Toronto Huskies at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens by a score of 68-66. The Knicks became a founding franchise in the NBA with the 1949 merger of the BAA and the National Basketball League. The team was NBA champs in 1970 and 1973. The Knicks have been conference champs eight times, most recently in 1999-00.
2008-2009
Head Coach Isiah Thomas, who went 56-108 in two seasons with the Knicks, was replaced as head coach by Suns Head Coach Mike D’Antoni after the 2007-08 season. D’Antoni is Italian by birth. He started his head coaching career as head coach for Milan, where he stayed until 1994, when he took the head coaching job for Benetton Treviso, leading that team to the European Cup in 1995. His NBA career started in 1997, when he became director of player personnel for the Denver Nuggets. He returned to Italy for the 2001 season and then accepted a position as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns in 2002. The next season he was instrumental in the trade that brought Steve Nash to Arizona and turned the club into a contender. In 2003 he was made head coach. Under him, the team won 50 or more games in four consecutive seasons.
There is a new sense of urgency in the Knicks organization going into the 2008-09 season. Expect trades ay any time - management is determined to find a player-mix that produces on the court now, and is not interested in long-term solutions. The Knicks have not won a playoff series since defeating the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the spring of 2000. Their last playoff appearance was a defeat in the First Round of the 2003-04 tournament to the New Jersey Nets. In 2007-08 the team went 23-59.
