Team History
During the Eighties NBA boom the league announced it wanted to add 4 franchises, expanding from 23 to 27 teams, by 1990. Florida, a state with no NBA franchise, was particularly targeted. Groups in Miami, Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg quickly responded. In April 1987, Charlotte and Minneapolis got franchises but the NBA expansion committee was split between Miami or Orlando for the third franchise. It was ultimately decided that the final two NBA expansion teams would both go to Florida. The Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat debuted in the 1988–89 season. The Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves entered the league the following year. The Miami Heat have been Eastern Conference Southeast Division champs seven times; 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007.
In 2006 the Miami Heat won the NBA championship. The team entered the playoffs as the second seed in the Eastern conference and drew the Chicago Bulls in the First Round. They dispatched the Bulls in 6 and followed that with series wins over the New Jersey Nets (4-1), Detroit Pistons (4-2) and the Dallas Mavericks (4-2). In 2006-07 the Heat were swept in the first round by the Bulls. In 2007-08 the team collapsed, posting an NBA worst 15-67 record. Team stars Alonzo Mourning suffered a season-ending knee injury on Dec. 19/07 and on Feb. 6/08 the Heat traded 13-time all-star center Shaquille O’Neal to the Phoenix Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. 2008-2009
In the 2008 NBA Draft, the Heat used its first pick (second overall) to select power forward Michael Beasley. In the second round they took Kansas forward Darnell Jackson who was later dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a second round 2009 pick. Earlier dealing had given the team 3 second-round picks for 2009 and they traded two of those to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for draft rights to guard Mario Chalmers from NCAA champion Kansas. This is a rebuilding year under head coach Pat Riley and the Heat fight to regain respectability in the Southeast.
The Miami Heat are in the Southeast Division of the 3-division Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.
