Team History
In early 1967 an investment group was formed to purchase an Indiana franchise in the proposed American Basketball Association. The franchise, christened the Indiana Pacers, played in the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum until 1974, when they moved to the new Market Square Arena in downtown Indianapolis. The ABA folded in 1976. The Pacers were one of four ABA teams invited to merge with the NBA. In 1976-77 the Indiana Pacers joined the Denver Nuggets, New York Nets and the San Antonio Spurs as new members of the National Basketball Association.
In 2000 the team was Eastern Conference champs for the first and so far only time, beating the New York Knicks in six. They lost in the NBA Finals in six to the Lakers. The 2006-08 seasons saw the Indiana Pacers miss the playoffs for the first two year absence since 1987-89.
The 2006-2007 season was one of the worst in team history, with the Pacers finishing with a 35-47 record. A lot of reasons have been put forth for the team’s collapse, including a mid-season trade that interrupted the team chemistry; in January, 2007, the Indiana Pacers traded four players to the Golden State Warriors for forwards Troy Murphy and Ike Diogu, forward - guard Mike Dunleavy and guard Keith McLeod. 3 months later the Pacers missed the playoffs. The Warriors, on the other hand, squeaked into the playoffs for the first time since the 1990s and knocked off the #1 seed Dallas Mavericks in the First Round.
In April 2007 the Indiana Pacers Fired head coach Rick Carlisle. In May journeyman coach Jim O'Brien was named the head coach of the Indiana Pacers. He promptly promised more than he could deliver by stating the Pacers would return to the playoffs in 2008. They did not, finishing a single win better than in 2007.
2008-2009
Despite missing the playoffs, the Pacers finished the 2007-2008 season strong. In the off-season the team traded the rights to Jermaine O’Neal and Nathan Jawai to the Toronto Raptors for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston, and the rights to Roy Hibbert. They also acquired the rights to Brandon Rush and players Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts from Portland in exchange for Ike Diogu and the rights to Jerry Bayless.
