Team History

The Houston Rockets began life as the San Diego Rockets and entered the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967-68 season. Wins were scarce and attendance poor. In 1971 an ownership group known as Texas Sports Investment bought the team and moved it to Houston, Texas, becoming the state’s first NBA team. In 1974-75 they made their first playoff appearance as the Houston Rockets, beating the New York Knicks in the First Round and losing to the 76ers in semifinals. Over the next quarter century the Rockets only missed the playoffs five times. In the 1994 NBA Final the Rockets beat the Knicks in 7. In 1995 they repeated, sweeping Orlando in four straight.

2008–2009

Houston has lost in the opening round the past four times they have made the playoffs; to the Lakers in 2004, the Dallas Mavericks in 2005 and twice to the Utah Jazz, in 2007 and 2008. Management is determined to get the team deep into the playoffs in 2009 and made several crucial moves in the 2008 off-season with many of the moves favoring playoff experience over youth. In the 2008 NBA Draft the Rockets drafted Nicolas Batum. A draft day 3-way trade saw Batum go to the Portland Trail Blazers for the draft rights to Darrell Arthur, which the Rockets traded to the Grizzlies for Donte Greene and a later pick. The team also picked up Brent Barry from the San Antonio Spurs, traded Bobby Jackson and Donte Greene and a first round 2009 draft pick to the Sacramento Kings for Ron Artest, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Sean Singletary. On August 25 the Rockets sent Singletary to the Suns for D.J. Strawberry. On August 29 they sent Ewing, Jr. to the New York Knicks in exchange for the rights to French center Frederic Weis. Weis was a first-round draft pick way, way back in 1999. He has spurned the NBA ever since. This is going to be a heck of a year and we’ve got your cheap Houston Rockets tickets – regular season and for the 2009 NBA playoffs.
