Team History
The Denver Nuggets started in 1966 as the Denver Larks, a charter member of the American Basketball Association. The “Larks” name was changed to “Rockets” before the start of the franchise’s first season, 1967-68. Following the ABA 1973-74 season the team changed its name to the Nuggets in anticipation of an ABA-NBA merger (Houston had joined the NBA as the Rockets the same year the Denver Rockets entered the ABA). The Nugget name was the winner in a name-the-team contest and was taken from the name of the National Basketball League Denver Nuggets, who played one season (1948-49) before the NBL merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the National Basketball Association in 1950.
The Nuggets were one of four American Basketball Association teams to survive the 1976 NBA – ABA merger. The others were the New York Nets, the San Antonio Spurs and the Indiana Pacers. The Nuggets made it to the final ABA Finals championship series, losing to the New York Nets in 6 games.
The Nuggets 33 years in the NBA the team has never won a Conference Championship and has not made it past the First Round since the 1994 NBA Playoffs, when the team beat Seattle in 5 before losing to the Utah Jazz in seven.
Since the 2003-2004 season the Denver Nuggets have a .572 winning percentage, .100 points better than their historical average. In the 2004 NBA Playoffs the Nuggets lost in the first round to Minnesota Timberwolves, 4 games to 1. In 2005 the San Antonio Spurs knocked them out in the first, in 2006 the Los Angeles Clippers did it, in 2007 San Antonio had the pleasure and this past spring the Los Angeles Lakers prevailed. Denver’s combined playoff won-loss record for the past five seasons is 4-20. Ouch.
2008-2009
Despite the team’s miserable showing in the playoffs since 2004, making it into the tournament the playoffs 5 years running isn’t a bad thing.
