Team History
The Atlanta Hawks started in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The name referred to three cities that straddle the Mississippi at the Iowa-Illinois border; Davenport, Iowa, and Moline and Rock Island, Illinois. Blackhawk was for Chief Black Hawk, a warrior who became chief of the Sauks, the original inhabitants of the area. As a member of the NBL, The Blackhawks became founding members of the NBA when the league merged with the rival Basketball Association of America to form the National Basketball Association in 1949. The Blackhawks moved to Milwaukee, then St. Louis, before landing in Atlanta in 1968.
The Hawks have not had a winning season since 1998-99. In the playoffs that year they beat the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Eastern Conference First Round, only to be swept 4-0 by the Knicks in the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals. A string of losing seasons brought a housecleaning like no other in the months leading up to 2004-2005. By the time the dust settled in the 2004 off-season, only two players remained from the previous year. The young team struggled to a 13-69 record. In 2005-06 the team improved to 26-56. Injuries plagued the team in the 2006-2007 season, but the Hawks – still the youngest team in the NBA – managed to improve to 30-52. In the 2007-08 season the Hawks made the playoffs with a 37-35 record but lost in the first round to the eventual NBA champions, the Boston Celtics.
2008-2009
Head coach Mike Woodson has been with the Hawks since 2004 and is the franchise’s tenth coach since the move from St. Louis in 1968. With a win percentage of .330 over his 4 full seasons as head coach of the Hawks, Woodson doesn’t seem impressive. But graph his trend and he’s looks a lot better. His winning percentage has improved each year, from .188 in 2004-05 to .451 last season.
The 2008-2009 season has the potential to be a break-out season as the young Hawks seek to go deeper than a first round loss (they took the eventual champion Boston Celtics the full 7) and fight to challenge the Charlotte Bobcats and Washington Wizards in the hunt for the Eastern Conference Southeast Division title.
