The Pittsburgh Pirates franchise was founded in 1882 as the Allegheny Alleghenys in the semi-pro American Association. In 1887 the franchise switched to the National League, where it has remained for over 120 years. The Pirates have won 9 National League Pennants (1979, 1971, 1960, 1927, 1925, 1909, 1903, 1902, 1901) and 5 World Series Championships (1979, 1971, 1960, 1925, 1909). Since 2001 the club has called PNC Park home field after playing in Riverfront Stadium for 30 years.

In the 1970s Pittsburgh was the hottest town in professional sports. While Chuck Noll’s Steelers were re-writing the NFL record book with 4 Super Bowl Championships in 6 years, the Pirates were making the postseason 6 times in 10 years and winning two World Series. It was during this period that a rivalry with the Cincinnati Reds developed; a rivalry that still resonates today. The Pirates have faced the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Championship Series 5 times (1970, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1990) and won only once.

In the early 90s the Pittsburgh Pirates lost the NLCS three consecutive seasons, 1990-92, with the back to back 7 game losses to the Atlanta Braves in 1991 and 1992 that are often cited as semi-mythic examples of hard-nosed baseball. The team has fallen on hard times since those losses and has not been back to the postseason since.

As the 2007 drew to a close the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise remade the front office. Late in the season Frank Coonelly, chief labor counsel for MLB, accepted the position of team president. On September 25th Neal Huntington, formerly a scout in the Cleveland Indians organization, was named as the team’s new general manager. Ten days later manager Jim Tracy was fired. A month later John Russell, manager of the triple A Ottawa Lynx, was named as Tracy’s replacement.

2008 was the new front office’s inaugural season and for fans hoping for a quick turnaround in the team’s fortunes, it was a disappointment. The Pittsburgh Pirates finished the regular season with a 67-95 record, a game worse than 2007, 30.5 games out of first in the NL Central.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the 6-team Central Division of the 16-team National League of 30-team Major League Baseball.
