In 2007 the Mets, beneficiaries of one of the worst collapses in baseball history (Chicago Cubs, 1969), became first team in baseball history to blow a lead of seven games with only 17 to play. The Mets finished second and missed the postseason. In 2008 they again finished in 2nd with a record of 89-73.
