The Kansas City Royals are an expansion franchise that was added to the American League in time to start the 1969 season. The Royals have won 2 American League Pennants (1985, 1980) and one World Series (1985).
In the 40 year history of the Kansas City Royals the team has made it to the postseason 7 times. Those 7 appearances all occurred within the ten year period from 1976 to 1985. The streak began in manager Whitey Herzog’s second season with the team. Herzog’s Royals were beaten by the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series in 3 straight season (1976-78). Evidently this frustrated the front office more than missing the playoffs entirely and at the end of the 1979 season Herzog was fired for the crime of finishing out of first place (the team finished a shameful 2nd) in the division for the first time in four years.
In the 6 years from 1980 to 1985 the Kansas City Royals made 4 more postseason appearances. In 1980, the first post-Herzog season for the franchise, the team finally beat the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series, but fell in 6 games to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. The following year the Royals were swept in first round by the Oakland Athletics. In 1984 the Royals returned to the ALCS and were again swept in straight games, this time by the Detroit Tigers. Finally, in 1987, the Kansas City Royals, in two monumental 7 game series, defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series and defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to become the 1987 World Series Champions. They have not been back to the postseason since.
In 2008 the Kansas City Royals finished the regular season with a record of 75-87, the team’s best showing in 5 seasons. The better showing on the field was reflected in a higher demand for Kansas City Royal tickets. Attendance over the past two seasons at Kauffman Stadium is up 18%.
The Kansas City Royals are in the 5-team Central Division of the 14-team American League of 30-team Major League Baseball.
