The Colorado Rockies, along with the Florida Marlins, are a 1993 National League expansion franchise. Unlike their East Division cousins, the Rockies have yet to win a World Series. Home field is Coors Field in Denver.
The Colorado Rockies’ first appearance in the postseason was as the National Leagues Wild Card entry in the 1995 NL divisional series round. The team had the misfortune to go up against the eventual 1995 World Champion Atlanta Braves and lost the franchises’ first playoff series in 4 games.
The Colorado Rockies did not return to the postseason for 12 seasons. In 2007 the team went on one of the greatest September runs in baseball history, winning 20 of 28 games. They won 14 of their last 15 games, including 11 in a row – the longest winning streak in baseball that season and a franchise record. The only loss during the streak was to the Arizona Diamondbacks, a loss that allowed the Diamondbacks to clinch first in the West. The Rockies finished the regular season with a record of 90-72, a 14 game improvement over the previous season and good enough for the NL Wild Card berth. They swept the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS, did the same to the Arizona Diamongbacks to win the first National League pennant in franchise history and were then swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
The Colorado Rockies started the 2008 season with high hopes and few changes. The two significant changes from the 2007 roster were both the result of deciding not to match offers for free agents Josh Fogg, a pitcher who wound up signing with the Cincinnati Reds, and second baseman Kaz Matsui, who landed in Houston with the Astros.
The season turned out to be a massive disappointment, with the Rockies finishing the regular season in third place with a record of 74-88. In the off-season the team fired 3 coaches (hitting coach Alan Cockrell, third base coach Mike Gallego and bench coach Jamie Quirk) but kept manager Clint Hurdle. If the club fails to get off to a strong start in 2009, Hurdle will be gone.
The Colorado Rockies are in the 5-team West Division of the 16-team National League of 30-team Major League Baseball.
